New implant with trifocal optic may bridge intermediate vision gap

PARIS — A new trifocal intraocular implant allows for complete spectacle independence with good vision at all distances, including intermediate, according to a speaker here.
"A unique feature of this new-concept multifocal lens is that it provides not only distance and near but also intermediate vision, the weak point of all multifocal implants so far," Gilles Lesieur, MD, said at the meeting of the French Society of Ophthalmology.
The PhysIOL FineVision lens combines two diffractive structures, one with a +3.5 D addition for near vision and one with a +1.75 D addition for intermediate vision. A more homogeneous light distribution is obtained by reducing loss of light to 14%, compared to 18% or 19% with other multifocal implants, according to Dr. Lesieur.
"The result is increased depth of field and a continuum of vision with no gap at intermediate," he said.
Complete spectacle independence was achieved by all 10 patients implanted bilaterally with the lens.
